Sabbath Observance

Ellen Kavanaugh

TGIF! Now I Can Do What *I* Want To Do!

Hmmm. That doesn't sound right, does it? Is the Sabbath a day to watch tv, play arcade games, go to the movies, shop at the mall, have a manicure, or play sports? Is it like a 'free day' to do whatever we choose? Like time off for good behavior because we worked so hard all week?

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." Exodus 20:8

"I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes, and keep Mine ordinances, and do them; and hallow My sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God." Ezekiel 20:19,20

What does it mean to keep *holy* or to *hallow* the Sabbath day? Hallow and Holy in these verses are both translated from the Hebrew word, Qadash (kaw-dash') meaning to consecrate, sanctify, prepare, dedicate, be hallowed, be holy, be sanctified, be separate.

The Sabbath Day is the sign between G-d and His people. What is our witness if others see us engaging in secular activities on this holy day? What does it tell the world if we show contempt for the day's holiness and treat the Sabbath like any other day?

"If thou turn away thy foot because of the sabbath, from pursuing thy business on My holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, and the holy of the LORD honourable; and shalt honour it, not doing thy wonted ways, nor pursuing thy business, nor speaking thereof; Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD, and I will make thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and I will feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father; for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." Isaiah 58:13,14
