Forget Suffering Mashiach -- We Want A King!

Ellen Kavanaugh

"And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear." Luke 19:11

Even by the time of Yeshua it seems the Messianic expectations were for a ruling kingly Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule in the land, not a Suffering Servant to die for our sins. We see this in Luke 24:21:

"But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place."

To them, His death seemed to prove He wasn't the Messiah.

Yeshua had to reveal the scriptures to them for them to understand the Messiah had to suffer first.

"Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:25-27

Also, in Acts 1:6, they asked Him:

"So, when they were together, they said to him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" Yeshua replied "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power."

Of course, there is nothing wrong with wanting the Davidic King Messiah to rule from His throne and establish His kingdom! But we must keep in tune to G-d's Plan -- redemption first, then the kingdom.
